Desire Path
There's something about this term 'desire path' that I find extremely attractive. I came across it a while ago- it describes a path that 'isn't designed but rather is worn casually away by people finding the shortest distance between two points.'. Its an interesting riff on the metaphor of path less trodden/travelled. Where once this might have been a choice between two similar paths, a desire path now represents something that is only accessible if you're on foot and might, not only get you there quickly but also more scenicly.
The beginnings of one pictured above is a scenic hypotenuse that takes you through a small grove of trees and along past the water, away from the heavily trafficked right angles of a busy four lane avenue and street.
